“Time it was, and what a time it was, it was…” –Simon and Garfunkel

Time it was, and what a time it was, it was
A time of innocence, a time of confidences
Long ago, it must be, I have a photograph
Preserve your memories, they’re all that’s left you

Such a short song. I guess that’s the point of it. The short length of the song is similar to the photograph in the song. Photographs are a single shot of a scene or moment in time just like this short song is a stanza of what could have been a longer piece of work.

The could-have-beens in our lives. It’s about yearning.

But back to the photograph thing. Photographs are supposed to capture the essence of a moment–the story which would take a long time to unfold in words but could be shared with a single visual in a way that everyone can appreciate because everyone has experienced whatever it was that was captured on camera.

It’s so universal that it can be captured simply this way and people get it.
